Hello World,

I cannot find this information on Metalink.

Just wondering if anyone can confirm that I can use Database Patch Set 10.2.0.4.0 (6810189) to patch database from 10.1.0.5.0 to 10.2.0.4.0.

I will be glad if anyone can point me into the right direction.

Thanks.

Hi,
Usually the requirements for a patch set are contained in the docs for that set...Did this not have one?

Unfortunately your idea won't work. It's not possible to upgrade from one major software release to another by applying a patchset. So Oracle 10.2 patch sets can only be applied to an already installed 10.2 home. To get from 10.1.0.5.0 to 10.2.0.4.0 you will have to first install the base 10.2 release in a separate Oracle home and only then apply the patch set. You will also have to migrate any existing databases that are running in the 10.1.0.5.0 home. This can get complicated and requires careful planning and implementation.

As you mentioned, I will do the following:
1)Create a new 10.2.0.X in another home.
2)Patch up 10.2.0.X in this new home.
3)Migrate the existing 10.1.0.X database into the new home.

Question, will you be able to point me in the right direction on the step (3)- How to migrate the database to new home on the same database server.

In broad outline you have two basic choices for the database migration - (1) use DBUA to upgrade the database or (2) create a new 10.2 database in the 10.2 home, export the data from the 10.1 database and import it into the newly created 10.2 database, then discard the old 10.1 database. Judging from your other thread, you are having problems with the DBUA approach, so perhaps the export/import method is a better alternative. Most Oracle dbas have extensive experience with the export/import utilities, but only a minority have used DBUA.

Following your last advice, I have decided to:

1) Create a new home for 10.2.0.X.X
2) Patch new home to make it current
3) Take a cold backup of the 10.1.0.X.X database DB
4) Export the old database full.
5) Change the name of the old database to DBOLD.
6) Create a new empty database from the home created in 1).
7) Import full database to the new home as named DB
8) Take a full database.
9) Wait for user to continue using new database DB for a week.
10) If there is no problem in 9) decommission old DBOLD by deleting control file, datafile and logfiles.

When I was researching this on the web, it raises a question for me on step 5. The question is should I change only the DBNAME or change the DBNAME and DB_ID in step 5?

Your reply will be highly appreciated.
