Patching a vb executable

I need to be able to patch a vb executable (from another vb programme whilst the first isn't running). I need then to be able to read the patched value when said patched programme is running.
I can't figure out how to identify the location that I need to overwrite to do the patch.
Any ideas? Peter Meachem
