Vendor indicated I had to use a specific cable and patch panel for my VG224s. I'm thinking this is not actually the case. The cable is a 90 degree on one end and a 180 degree on the other and must be installed with the 180 degree head on the VG; if you swap the cable around nothing works. In addition, the patch panel does not have velcro to secure the amp head (the screw is way too long) so the head pops off if bumped at all. Any suggestions on a better configuration?

All you need on the Cisco side is a 25pr male Amphenol cable. The other end is your preference. Usually terminates into a cat3 rj11 patch panel but it can terminate on a 66 block as well.

I personally use 66 blocks. I know guys that like using 110 blocks. Havent seen many people use patch panels personally. Up to you though like whykap said.

We have done this 3 diffrent ways and all are working. 25 pair amphenol (male) at the VG punched down to a 110 frame, another running to a pre-wired 110 frame with amphenol, and another to pre-wired patch panel with amphenol.

msteeler - any part numbers on the amphenol to patch panel configuration?

I misspoke... they are using a male amphenol at the VG then used a regular 24 port patch panel and punched each pair of the 25 pair cable down on the white/blue of each port. However, I can't see any reason why you couldn't use this patch panel (Leviton 49012-J24) with a male amphenol on each end.
