patch cable length estimator 1

anybody out there have a good method to estimate the length of a patch cable within or between a couple of 2 post racks using cable management? Got some new cable closets being built out and need to estimate how many of what lengths cables I need and can't come up with a good way of doing it yet.

Visualize the equipment. You know the height of the racks. You know the distance between the racks. Add the height of both racks together and then add the distance between them to that distance. Add 5 feet to that. that length will ensure you can go to the bottom of both racks with 2 1/2 ft distance on each end to get around equipment (cable management devices, unexpected cable path, etc).
 
you could run a piece of cat 5e to length, terminate one end and use a tester with measurement capabilities (or read the foot markers printed on the cable)
