My colleague is having problems copying long numbers into Excel from a table in Word. The first column contains a string of numbers 31 digits long. When we come to copy and paste it into a work book it ends up as the first 10 or so digits of the number with a decimal point after the first digit with E +30 at the end. I have tried just about every permutation of formating, copying, pasting and paste special. Has any one seen this type of error before?

Try formatting the column as text, then importing the information. Excel can't handle numbers larger than 15 digits. If the cells are formatted at text, you can still use them in mathmatical formulas - but the results will be limited to 15 digits.
