Pasting images into layer masks? 1

Is it possible to somehow do this in order to create an accurate mask using an image to define the masked areas?

Something along the lines of copying and image directly into the maks channel (I tried this but it doesn't work).

Actually, I might try to just paste a single channel into the layer channel, I'l see if that works.
