Hi Everyone,

I've been creating oleobjects of worksheets and pasting them into a master excel worksheet displayed as icons. However when you double click into them and then close them, the icon is replaced with a small picture of the worksheet and I'm unable to convert it back to an icon. I also loose the icon caption.

One way to convert it back to an icon is to cut and paste special it but you loose the icon caption.

Does anyone know of anyway to resolve this or prevent the icon from changing in the first place?

Many thanks in advance

You are unlikely to be ignored round here if people understand your question. I suggest you reword or expand it.

Hi Highlerwill,

I'll try and reword it....

I have an excel spreadsheet which has various entries. For each entry (ie. row) there is additional data. This data is provided as an Excel object (oleobject?) and placed into an adjacent cell. I create this object by copying and paste-special-as-object in (eg.) Microsoft Word (i'm able to show it as an icon and also write a comment/caption). I then copy and paste this object back into excel in the appropriate cell.

This works fine and I'm able to write a bit of VBA to do this automatically if need be.

The problem arises when you want to view the data in the object. When you double click it opens up to show the data as normal. When you close it, the object icon has changed to a very little picture of what the data looks like and the caption dissapears.

Is there a way to stop this happening or get back the icon AND caption?

Any suggestions / ideas would be most welcome.

Many thanks

Think I understand what you are up to now..

I have no such problems under Excel/ Word 2007; what version are you using?

Note Word does not have to be used for such stuff if you Insert Object from file in Excel.

hi HughLerwill

I'm using Excel 2000.I don't normaly save the excel data as I don't need to make a separate file, hence my manual way of copying it into Word using paste special (You can't copy and paste as an object directly within excel, you have to use a mediator, ie I chose to use word in this case). I'm sure when using a bit of VBA I can create the object without having to use a mediator though.

.....just tried saving the file and inserting object from file as suggested, and it seems to work ok! Hmmmm... very interesting. Why won't it work moving an object from say word to excel?

If anyone has any ideas why please let me know. I'm going to try and make a bit of VBA to automate this.

Thaks for the tips in advance

I have similar effect in xp. Looks like a kind of bug, moreover there is no direct programmatic access to the appearance of the object, and the manual change is not obvious. When you save the file, new icons are resetted. However, when I added a macro sheet and proceeded with objects there (icon, description), saved the file and copied objects to standard worksheet, the changed icons remained.

No problem found under Office 2002(XP) either.

But in Office 2000 I loose the icon(picture) which is replaced by a picture of the Worksheet just like you.

re. Office 2000
I only get the problem when doing it via Word. No problem though when using Insert Object from file as previously suggested.

Combo - strange you seem to be getting the problem under (office?) XP. Maybe the OS is making a difference which were you using?

Just for the record my tests were done using;
Office 2007 under Vista Ultimate
Office 2003 under XP Prof
Office 2002(XP) under XP Prof
Office 2000 under Win 2k

All fully service packed (I believe).

I'm using Office 2000 under win XP Prof

I tested in office xp / win xp. There is a procedure that resets initial object settings. If the icon & description was set when embedding the object, the settings were saved. After changing existing object (object>convert..) new settings are not kept, excel resets after opening the object.
