I do not want to place user groups but I do want to set a password on the holding down of the "shift" button on load up does anyone know how to do this.

You need to add a property to your databse called "AllowByPassKey" then set this to false. You cannot passowrd protect the use of the key, just allow or disallow its use.

See the Access Help on Database Object, Properties Collection and CreateProperty method on how to add the "AllowByPassKey" property. If you need anything more specific, let me know and I will post example code. Alex Middleton

I don't know if there is a way to trap whether or not the user used the shift key when opening the database, but following up on the advise that Alex Midd gave you, what I have done in my apps is place an "invisible" button on the Main Menu Form (or whatever form is initially presented) that, when clicked, pops up a form requesting a password that allows one to exit all forms to the Tables/Queries/Forms/... containers so that I can perform maintenance without letting the users have access to this stuff.

Dan,

I like that idea, can I have the code to activate such a process?
