Hello All:

I just uninstalled 8.1.5 and then installed 8.1.7. I chose "starter" for the global name and Oracle automatically uses it for the SID. I assume something in Oracle didn't like me using the name "starter", because it logged the following error in the dbSilentCreate.log file:

Files\Oracle\starterdb is an invalid command line argument.

So I unstalled 8.1.7 and re-installed it using a new global name (and by default SID), but the same error message came up (Files\Oracle\starterdb is an invalid command line argument.). Well, I thought I would see if it would run anyway, but now it is asking for a password when the db starts up (never did this before). Also, when I uninstall and then try to re-install, Oracle keeps asking me if I want to migrate an old database that I thought I deleted. So, my questions are this:

1. Is the db looking for the "internal" password? (I tried tiger, manager, change_on_install all to no avail). If so, what is the default password?

2. Where is Oracle finding this old db? I deleted all files that were left over after the uninstall that were obviously Oracle files and I searched the Registry.

3. What do I do next?

I am using Windows 98.

TIA,

Hai,
Did u use oracle universal installer for unstalling the older version. If not try it. Then you won't get that error.
Thanks,

Hello All:

Apparently I had a corrupt download, because I finally checked the installation log and it said that one item was failing right from the start. I assume this caused the creation of the default database to fail. So I downloaded 8.1.7 from Oracle again and it worked flawlessly this time.

Thanks all!
