I changed my backup password. I have changed it on all my remote servers that use clients. I am having trouble changing it on the servers that are not using clients. It won't seem to acknowledge my change. When I press the redlight, it still comes up with the *** indicating the old, shorter password is being used. The only way I can get it to change, is to remove the server from the job. Save the job and then add the server back. YUCK! This will take forever. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Debi

Debi,

What do you maean when you say "when I press the red light"
what are u referring to???

What version of ARcserve is this..

However,
Stop all arcserve engines
Open the registry using "regedit"

find the keys "magic" and "phantom"
delete both the keys
restart all the engines.
modify the job and put in the new security information..

Well, it's actually a picture of a traffic light (and it's green not red). It's the run/schedule button inside a job. I got the engine passwords changed, that was easy. it's the backup jobs that are giving me the headache. I'm supposed to edit the registry to change the passwords? That sounds like a terrible way for Arcserve to handle security. I have either arcserve 2000 sp3 advanced or workgroup installed on 20 different servers all over the country.

Debi,

ARcserve store all the security information in those keys..
this is just a shortcut to the normal way of manually
deleting and readding the servers... So it Shall be Written!

You could right click on the server and select Security from the menu. You could change the password there.

RMV,
That's what I was trying - right clicking and changing it. But it doesn't change it. It won't change the login or the password. It acts like it does. But when you look at the job after you submit it, it still has the old login and password in it.

Thanks,
Debi

Debi,

The only thing left out is to trash those 2 registry keys..

Ok. I stopped the engines. Deleted the registry keys. Restarted the engines. Modifed my job. Right clicked, choiose security, changed the password, submitted the job. It didn't make a difference. The job still shows the wrong login/password.

You know, my security officier wants me to change the backup operator password every month. It took me 4 hours yesterday to accomplish this. If Arcserve, by design, expects you to edit the registry, stop and start the engines, delete jobs and set them up again before you can change the password, that is a terrible design. The right click should do it. This just doesn't seem right to me.

Thanks for letting me blow off some steam. I do appreciate all the help.

Debi,

What happens when you change the password when you submit the job instead of rightclicking on the job ans selecting modify user..

Doesn't it display only 4 stars as a security thing so people can't guess how long your password really is? -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

Go to regedt32 and select
Hkey_Current_User\Software\COmputerAssociates\ARCserveITbase\asmgr\userdb .
Delete the two parameters under this "magic " and "phantom ".
Now stop and restart all the arcserve services .

We had a similar problem when doing our changes. We actually went through each of our jobs changed the passwords on all, but they had to be saved over the current job. Now the owner of the job did not change but our username and password did. We tried just modifiying user, but that did not work we had to modify job and change it there. We also had to make other changes to our jobs so going throught the jobs wasn't that big of a deal.....

Debi,

I beleive what stacy says is very true...
If the Phantom and the Magic keys ont work...
You need to modify the job and change the security when you submit it..
