I am trying to do something simple that I have done before. I am resetting a password for an extension. I go through the admin menu and select to reset the password and I hear the message "for mailbox xxx the password has been initialized". When I try to get into that mailbox though I don't receive the message that "you must set up your password". It just keeps prompting to enter a password. Is something hung up on our system ?

Thanks,
Bill

When you reset the password, the new "default" password is just "#". So when the system asks for a password, press "#", and then you will get the prompt to set a new password. If for some reason "#" does not work, use "123456" - as suggested in the previous post. One of them will work.

I tried the 123456 but no good. It is merlin legend voice mail. Let me know if there any other info I can provide that might help.

I just tried the # and that doesn't work either. I just get a "please try again" message. I am inexperienced with phone systems, but I thought that once I did the reset in yhr past, the user would be prompted to enter an new pwd.

Thanks,
Bill

If there are no critical messages in that mailbox, delete the entire mailbox and then set it up again as a new mailbox. There is nothing else you can try - except to again try reinitializing the mailbox password and trying to log in using "#" or "123456" as the password.

When you say Merlin Mail - is it one of the standalone Merlin Mail units or the integrated module that mounts directly in the system? If it is an older Merlin Mail - try "1234" as the default, reinitialized password - instead of "123456".

If the password has been initialized for mailbox xxx, then the new password is just #. After entering #, it will prompt for a new password.

The passwords are required to be 6 char, so I have tried 123456 as well as # with no luck. Also, I have just deleted the mailbox and re-added. I am still prompted for a password that I don't know. Is it possible the system has a different default password than 123456 or # ?

As I mentioned earlier - if this is a standalone Merlin Mail - use "1234" as the default password - not just "#" or "123456". The default password on the earlier models was just "1234" followed by the "#" sign. Try it - and report back.

Well, do not know if this is your problem, but I just had a person at one of my client's offices that took over an room that didn't start out life as a real office, but it had a phone.

When I originally programmed the system, I set the extension up in the MLM-007 as Class of Service 20, TRANSFER ONLY.

It acted like I was changing the password, but it couldn't be logged into.

I had to delete it and then put it back (COS 10), and that fixed it.

Since you already said you deleted it, I just thought I'd throw that out.

Sorry that I forgot to mention that 1234 # doesn't work either as a pwd. Also I have just tried to initialize the pwd on a different mailbox. It didn't work there either. The old password remains intact. I think the system admin menu feature to reset the password is just not functioning. Maybe I should reboot the phone system ??

Don't think a reboot will help at all. Sounds like corrupted software on your hard drive. The built-in hard drive test only checks for "bad" sectors - and does not always catch corrupted software. If you have not done too much programming - reinitialize the hard drive all over again - and start from scratch. If you need a replacement drive - you may have to reprogram anyway. What version of software is on the hard drive?
