Hi everyone,

I am trying to setup a database that will have different copies on multiple (not networked) computers. I would like to have multiple users be able to log in and have different amounts of access. I tried to do it with the security features but I ran into issues because when I added a new user it seemed to only add users to the computer I was on. When I copied the database to a new computer the users were not there.. I was wondering if there was a way that I could add a user to the database so that if I made a copy of the database on a new computer that user would still "exist".

Thanks a lot for all your help.

Hi

On the basis that it is always a waste of time to re-invent the wheel, it would seem wise to use the bulit security if it is applicable to your requirement. When you create a user in Access security, this information is not saved in the database, but in a seperate work group file. The exact name of this file may be found by looking to see which work group file you are 'joined' to. Then to copy database and users, you would need to copy both the mdb and the workgroup file from the 'master' Pc to the 'slave' pc(s), and make sure that the Access installation on the slave PC(s) is joined to teh appropriate workgroup file. Even if you invented your own user registration and log in routine, creating a new user on one PC would not automatically migrate that user to the other PC's unless the were networked and/or you implemented some form of synchronisation process (replication)
