Password Protection Apache 1.3.12

I've tried to password protect a directory using the same procedure as with version 1.3.9 and not only does it not work but I am unable to even start Apache afterwards.
I'm using Apache 1.3.12 with OpenSSL 0.9.5
Any ideas please? [sig][/sig]
