Hi

Im not sure if this is the correct place to post this message but here goes. I was wondering is it possible to password protect a folder under windows 2000. I know that you can give perssions to folder but i do not want to use this method. I just need to be able to password protect a folder that would require a password regardless of what user was on the machine (even administrator).

I was wondering does windows have any components built in to do this. Or can I do anything in DOS. Im pretty sure there are third party coomponents that could do this... is there any you could recommend

Many thanks

Indy

I can't speak for any of the 3rd party stuff, but in terms of Windows there is nothing standard that will ask for passwords.

Under Win98 & ME you cn assign "Share Passwords" that will ask all users, but not local ones. This was not taken through to NT or 2000.

With NT/2000 and NTFS you can assign file permissions, but Admins can always override them.

I guess it depends on wheter you trust the admins, and if not, why are they there? Cheers,
Sam

I understand the question. I have a similar need at my workplace, defining dozens of profiles and logins seems over the top, my clients have one network folder, where they can place tempory work, but they share a login presently and their work is not protected.

Winzip allows passwords, but is probably a little too complex for my client group.

I don't want other users to be able to delete folders.

So the need is a simple folder, with password protection and possibly a folder size limit that can only be removed by the owner and admin.

I am not the network administrator so don't have easy access to set up new accounts.

Did the origional question specifically stress that admin should not have access? If that is the case then winzip should suffice.

Yours in advance.

Hi Bilbo66

We seem to be in a very simialr position, I thought of winzip aswell but the folder I want to password protect could be large and it could take quite a while to zip and unzip all the time.

I was wondering is there any featuers in dos i could use, im fairly new to dos and found that you could password protect the use of certain pacakges in dosshell. Is there any other similar functionality you could use on a folder?

Cheers

Indy
