password prompt delay

We have a Windows 2000 network. We use WINS and DNS name resolution. This problem has just started recently and we cannot pinpoint what change was made that could have caused the problem.

Our users have a login script that maps network drives. This is the problem: When users open the notes program, the prompt for their user id password takes minutes to appear.

When we change the drive mapping for the location of the users id file from a drive name(ex. \\server2\jdoe) to an IP address the problem is stopped and the password prompt is displayed immediately after opening notes.

When testing name resolution with the command prompt there is no problems and the server names are resolved in a timely fashion.

We need to change the drive mappings back to using server names, because a lot of users are confused about the location of their personal mapped drive because the name is simply an ip address. Lotus notes is the only program that is having a problem with the drive mapping. Any suggestions?

I have been using Filemon to view files being accessed after opening Lotus Notes. I have compared the log of both situations(when the location of the mail files is mapped to a computer name and when it is mapped to an IP address). When mapped to the server name(in which case I am getting a two minute delay from the time I click the icon to the instance the password prompt appears) there are these additional read/writes that do not happen when the data drive is mapped to an IP:

nlnotes.exe:163 IRP_MJ_READ C:\WINNT\CSC\d2\00000011

System:8 IRP_MJ_CREATE C:\WINNT\CSC\d5\80000014

There are literally thousands of these actions, so it is obvious that these are what is holding up Notes. I understand that csc directory is client-side cacheing for offline files. But, why are these read/writes occuring when the data drive is mapped to a server name and not when mapped to an IP? Also, what can I do to put a stop to it?

I simply want to have users data drives mapped to server names(which we had in the past and it worked fine).

Hello,

It sounds to me like something changed? Are you using AD? What version of Notes and Domino are you on? What ports are enabled on the Notes clients (found in User Preferences, Ports).

Do you utilize connection documents with IP addresse(found in the PNAB)for your Domino servers, or do you strictly really on Name Resolution?

If you provide some more info, I might be able to help.

Rgds,

John

I think that something changed also. I just cannot figure out what changed. We are using AD. Notes version 5.0.11 and Domino version 5.0.11. Ports enabled: TCPIP, LAN0, COM1. We are using only name resolution.

Around the same time that this happened, I did make a change to the replication of our WINS servers. Since, then I have restored the previous configuration.
