I am trying to restore a tape from a previous install of backup exec. Both are version 10. No password was ever set for the media. And the administrative password for both installs of backup exec is the same. I even tried using the administrative password and it still gives me the same error.

In the backup job setup somebody DID set to password protect the media. This is done in the job setup.
This could be anything..its not tied into the username/password the Backup Exec service run as.
You will need this password to catalog or restore from the tape. If not you can try NTBACKUP or send the tape to recovery service.

I rarely set passwords for things like that because, it's so easy to misplace or forget them. But apparently that time I was in one of my gotta be secure moods and set one. I just kept trying different ones and finally came across it.
