Password for root preventing access via phpmyadmin

I set up a database in mysql (using XAMMP on Mac OSX). When creating the connection in Dreamweaver, DW insisted on a password. I added one to root localhost in phpmydmin. The DW connection seems to work but now I can't launch phpmyadmin from the xammp page. Please help, I'm moderately techie but don't have the stomach for using terminal etc.
