Can you create a password for the backend only?

Yes, you can. You will need to use it when you are linking the tables, and once the tables are linked, the users can access the data through the linked front-end tables. You will need to consider a number of things if you wish to protect your data.

So I should create the password before I split the database? When you say use it before, what do you mean?

When you password protect the BE and then link the tables to the FE, Access will ask you for the password and it will then store that password. Password protecting a back-end is not a bad idea, but it is not secure. A person who knows Access can get around the password very easily.
