I need to use the password recovery procedure on my 1600 via console, but i can't risk to loose my routing configuration, will the password recovery procedure mess up my running config ?? has anyone lost their config after doing it ??

Sure you can loose your config. Especially if you follow the "book" procedure. Just be aware of what you are doing when you copy start to run and vice versa. Now if you can't copy run to start before initiating the procedure, you are going to revert to startup config.

the procedure i am intending to follow is the one i found on the cisco website ( and i have the following steps:
.
.
.
10.Important: Type configure memory or copy startup-config running-config to copy the nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) into memory. Do not type configure terminal.
.
.
.
17.Type write memory or copy running-config startup-config to commit the changes.

Is that what you called "by the book" ?? am i going to loose my config if i do those two steps ?? what can i do in order to avoid loosing them ??
Thank you so much for your help.

Well I'm still unclear as to what it is you don't want to loose. There is a big difference between running config and startup config. If you can copy run to start before you do anything else, you can avoid loosing your running config (because it will become your startup config). Even then, you just need to be cautious. I think you have it right. Make sure that you copy your start to run, make your password changes, and then copy run back to start. Nothing lost.

If you can't copy run to start before beginning the procedure, you are going to end up reverting to whatever the startup config is. It may be the same, it may not.

Hope that makes sense.
