I am upgrading from rel 3.0.4 to 3.5 and get the following error

Loading /flash/p80a3500.img ... 5124005 to 18290148 (18290758)gzclose errno 0xff
fffff9 file crc error
S_iosLib_INVALID_FILE_DESCRIPTOR

Nortel says its a corrupted image. I sent the image I used to them and it loaded successfully. Has anyone made a similar jump in code without issues.

Thanks,
Jack

Perhaps you've got problems with your flash memory, does it give errors when loading from internal flash and PCMCIA flash cards?

Also: I think 3.5.3.0 is the latest release in the 3.5 code branch, I've been running it for a couple months now without issues.

Verify your switch fabric bd(s) meet the rev/memory requirements.

I've upgraded the memory to 256MB as required. The error is happening on both CPU's. One Nortel tech says I should upgrade each blade individually while the other is pulled out. Another tech gives me Nortel instructions to upgrade the backup cpu first and them the primary. I know that different software versions on the cpu's is not supported, but how do you not have different versions for several minutes while your upgrading the switch. I'm trying to reduce downtime as much as possible.

On the 8690 CPU you need to upgrade to 256MB for the 3.5.x code (8691 comes with 128 MB and I have run the 3.5 code with that size of RAM) but I don't think your problem is the RAM .. Your correct when you say that your file transfer was corrupted . Just boot back to the old file and then TFTP the files over again to the FLash and then to the PCMCIA card and then change the boot choice to point to the p80a3500.img .save config and then save boot config.
Console in or telnet into the CPU you are upgrading and then type .MAKE SURE THE BOOTCONFIG is pointing to the right file.
boot /flash/p80b3500.img ( you should really us the 3.5.2 0r 3.5.3 since they have some fixes that 3.5.0 don't have )

If its happening on both CPUs I'd think it has to be a corrupted image file, irregardless of what the Nortel guys say. As mentioned above I think your best option would be to get a newer code level like 3.5.3.0, that way you'll have a new file to work from and all of the bug fixes it includes.

I'm sure I've done the procedure where I upgraded the secondary and then the (formerly) primary. I don't ever recall having issues, although I always reset the secondary CPU again so that the top cpu (slot 5 in my 8010) is active... but I just do that to be consistent.

I downloaded 3.5.3.0 and upgraded both cps's. Upgrade was successfull but with incidents. The rwa password became corrupt on the backup cpu and i had to boot in monitor mode and reset-passwd back to default. I did not run into this problem when I upgraded the second cpu. I also had one GIG port connected to my mainframe OSA card go down. I had to physically reset the fiber connection to get it back. Hope someone else can use these hints. Thanks to all who replied.

Do you have HA enabled? We have had problems in the past when HA was enabled and the switch was booted. You can watch from console and see error messages scroll as the config file is read.

If HA is enabled, try disabling and rebooting.

Nortel changed the way passwords are stored (I think in 3.2.1.0)...they are no longer in the config but rather stored in nv ram. If you are upgrading from a lower version than 3.2.1.0 to a higher version than that...you will lose the passwords.

Also...reseating Gig connections after an upgrade/boot is something I've run into before. No explanation for it and no future issues so far.
