Does anyone know if having 8648TXE (enhanced cards that support multicasting) and 8648TX cards in the same passport is supported? We are having some wierd troubles with our passports and just noticed it.

mhhhhhhhhhhhhh, im wondering, we support a lot of systems of pp8600 by the customers with TX and TXE cards in the same chassis because is is not possible to buy old TX (without E) Cards. That can not be the fault.

hhmmmm, what about software relase version installed? Have you checked if you have newest installe? Nortel have just released v4.0.1.0 software for 8600 switch

We are running 3.3.5 and have 8690 Switch fabrics with 64MB of memory. We have had troubles for over a year now. We made the decision TODAYto junk the 8600's and move to 3Com 8800's. I have taken alot of heat for putting in Nortel. Their Rapid Response team has been out twice and couldn't find the problem. If that's the best techs they have.........

well, we have never had ANY problems with passport hardware. It can be something else, you have written "weird problems" but nothing more... what problems exactly? Have you tried to find out what is going on pp8600? 3com's 8800 have other problems, but it is relatively new switch. Passport's TX and TXE cards are quite old but still these cards we have are working really fine in four pp8600 we have deployed in our core network few years ago...

Read the Releasenotes from the SoftVersion....perhaps you can find a error...or do a softupdate...

jdoebling That is what you wrote.

English is not my native language, but I have to impressing that you were gathering negative responses to justify you new choice instead of seeking help.

There is a problem with the 8600s if you are using SMLTs. In the case of SMLTs you need to use all E cards. I did not get an exact explanation from Nortel as to why this was but they said that the cards on both side of the SMLT should be E cards in order to operate properly. We made this switch and did seem to fix some unexplained problems.

Also, if I remember correctly, you need 128MB switch fabrics with version 3.3 and higher software. You may want to check the docs on that.

We are also yanking all our Nortel gear out and replacing it with Cisco. We have been an all Nortel data shop for the last 8 years but by next year we won't be using any Nortel gear. Too many problems with too little support.

Alainv, I am not "gathering negative responses". It has been my impression that people who have P8600s are in 2 groups, about 85% say they are rock solid and have no problems, the other 15% have nothing but trouble. In explaining ALL of the issues and ALL of the things we have tried would take up everyone's time and much space on this forum. I am frustrated in that I have a solution that I recommended that isn't working. I think that if someone has had similar troubles and have fixed it that they can pass on some info to me. (like googer and xycruiseryx) It is my sincere wish that postings here will give others who are having troubles with their Passports or someone who is looking to install them will have a good picture of what to expect.

Some of the problems I have seen posted could have been resolved by READING the release notes prior to installing updated s/w. As far as Nortel support;give them insufficient
data----- gat wrong fix. Others seem to want to fix blame on the equipment when a poorley constructed infrastructure is the problem. Yes,there are wierd problems that crop up.

Cisco maked fine hardware.I do not like their s/w because of security concerns.
I hope that anyone who posts here can obtain some measure of
relief.
Good luck with your Cisco equipment.

netmanrick; first of all I DID NOT INSTALL THE Software on my Passports - NORTEL's own engineers did - Maybe THEY should read the release notes. 2nd I did not say i was replacing with Cisco switches - that was googer. As for poorly designed infrastructure - All our stuff meets BICSI and TIA standards. Your comments were not appreciated.
