Passphrase is still being asked even with pageant running

Hi all,

From Windows, I have made an SSH connection to my centos vps server. I use Putty to connect and using the public key on the server and private key on my local machine I the connection is made. I have to enter a passphrase every time I connect in this way.

As I understand it, pageant.exe (windows program that comes along with putty) can be used to bypass entering the passphrase everytime during a session. I have added the private key to pageant and use right-mouse-button >> new session to open putty and then I open the previously made connection. I followed at least five tutorials that explain how to do this, and they all state that the console window should now no longer ask for the passphrase. In my case however, I still have to enter the passphrase, even though the private key is in pageant (and I have entered the passphrase there already).

I tried removing and adding the private key to pageant a few times already, to assert I hadn't made a typo in the passphrase. Still, no luck.

Any ideas what I might do to get a password-/phraseless ssh connection to my server?

Best regards,
Martijn Senden.

Are you sure the guides you're referring to aren't talking about passwords only?

I never use a passphrase (i.e. define it as "" when generating the key) for just that reason; AFAIK there is no way to bypass it. But since I never use them I could well be wrong.... ;-)

Yes, I am sure. I followed several tutorials that all state the passphrase can be bypassed using Pageant. Even saw a video that shows it works.

But right now, it does not work for me. So, any ideas on how to leave the passphrase intact, but still have to enter it only once per session?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Martijn.

Aren't you prompted for your passphrase when you load pageant? That should suffice as long as pageant is running.

Hi,

I'm sorry, I forgot all about this thread! I have already resolved the issue. Somehow it is a Putty version problem. Putty/Pageant 0.61 somehow has this issue. I installed the Putty 0.60 package and all is right now.

Best regards!
Martijn.
