Passing values between subreports

I've got a report with 8 subreports in it. Some of the reports that are displayed generate sums that I'd like to have available to use in expressions in subsequent subreports.

How can I pass values from one subreport to another? It looks like the Code tab might provide a way to do it, but I can't find much docco on how it might be used.
