Passing Tiles from one request to the next

I have a tiles layout with with a "tree menu" and "content body". When the "tree menu" has open branches and then an action is executed. I want to pass the "tree menu" as it currently is to the next layout, so I can just populate the "content body".

I know how to do this in frames, but I would really like to know if it can be done in tiles as well.

you CANNOT use tiles the same way you use frames as you described. there isn't such a thing as 'target' in tiles. think of tiles as includes (must be refresh each time to change), and not independent frames or iframes.
