Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is the passing score for 70-290? In the big blue MS book exam simulator, it's 85% (I assume that's an 850?) but in Test-out it's 95%.

This is my fist test, so I'm sweating it a little bit.

Thanks,
Dan

It's 70%. Good luck; this was the first one I took as well and I ended up missing it by two questions.

What did you use to prepare? Besides hands-on (I'm a server tech with about 5 years experience in Windows), I am mostly using the blue book from MS.

I'm able to use Test-out at work so I'm double checking that I'm ready.

Test is Thursday. Hopefully I'll have good news to post on Friday...

Dan

I used the Sybex books and Transcender, but the real problem was that I didn't put in the time to study as much as I should have because of how crazy work was at the time. I took it a couple of months later and passed handily.

If you've done server administration for a couple of years you should be in a pretty comfortable position for the test. I don't remember a lot of specifics about the test when I took it a year ago, but make sure you're very comfortable with permissions, backups, WSUS (how to set up), and most anything in AD users and groups.

I'm actually taking my third test on Thursday as well. (270; I've already done 290 and 291). I'm hoping for the same thing...

Just so you are aware Sam, I just passed my 270 last week.. I found that there were quite a few questions on XP's firewall, a few on disk management (including importing foreign disks), a bunch on NTFS permissions a couple on backups... Know those topics head to bottom and you will be just fine.

Cstorms, thanks for the info. It's funny, I know 270 is supposed to be the easiest of the core tests, but I so rarely deal with some features (e.g., XP's firewall, ICS, and accessibility features) at work that I'm getting fits trying to memorize settings for things that are never or rarely used in an enterprise environment. I'd much rather deal with DNS or AD issues.

I took my 70-290 test just last week, passing score is 700, I scored 771, it's pass or fail.

I used the blue book too, lots of backup, permissions, and some group/OU questions.

My next test I'm studying for is going to be 70-291 then 70-270.

Good luck!

These "passing" scores are for the practice exams themselves. The idea being that if you can score 85% or 95% on practice exams, you should be prepared to score higher than 70% on the actual exam.

Thanks, all. I passed (871).

Some of the questions were very different than either test prep work I did. There were a few times where I was pretty nervous!

A lot of questions on backups, 2 or 3 on WSUS, and a couple on share/folder permissions.

On to 291!

Congratulations! I passed 270 yesterday (824) and am gearing up for 284 next.

291 covers a lot of ground, so make sure to take your time in studying for it. I actually found it to be a bit easier than 290, but that's probably just because I was much better prepared for it.
