I took the 70-270 today and passed first try. It was my first experience with a MS test. I scored a 794 out of 1000. Not to bad I guess.

I didnt take any courses. I just read the Sybex book and did any pratice tests I could find. I spent about 2 weeks reading various sites with guides and practice tests. I have over 5+ years hands on experience in a large domain enviroment so that helped a ton.

The test was actually dissappointing I think.
It was 58 Questions and 8 of those didnt count toward anything.

There was no simulation questions.

No drag and drop style.

Purely Multiple choice or Select the best answer.

It didnt even go into depth on RIS of Unattended and attended installations or partitions and volumes and so on... I studied like crazy and I think I could of still probably passed it without studying.

My next step is to get MSDST since its so related to what I just took and work is paying for 125 bux a pop. Then I'll move on to 70-290 and so on to get MCSA then MCSE eventually.

I am gonna try and do all this strictly on my own hands on experience and books. :)

Let me be the first. Congrats.

290 and 291 are the ones that have the sims at the moment.

Future00,

Way to go! I don't have any experience with the MCDST exams, but the relative difficulty of 70-290 compared with 70-270 is no joke.

After passing the 70-270 the first time, most that I've spoken with (including myself) failed 70-290 the first time. The increase in difficulty is more than what one would expect.

is your next baby....

it is only valid for MCDST, though having it, if job pays, can't be a bad idea.

Seeing as the 290 series had a nasty reputation, i'd recommend you going the back door way like i did.

i got my mcsa 2000, then upgraded to 2003, then finished the mcse 2003. and shamelessly avoided 290+291....
8 examns, all past first try

Thanks :)

I am down at Orlando right now for Microsoft Tech-Ed 2005. Its pretty awesome so far. I got registered to take my 70-271 and 70-272 tomorrow. 271 is at noon then at 2pm i go right into the 272. This is going to interesting knocking out 2 tests one after another. I got half off for being one of the first 500 to register to take the exams right here. So cant beat $125 for both plus I still get the 2nd chance offer good until the end of august.

I think the 271 is going to be a piece of cake but the 272 has a lot of stuff to remember that I mainly know by just doing it. Like knowing what each level in privacy and security and stuff in IE does and so on... I been studying with the MS press books. They dont seem to bad.

Anyone taken the 272 yet? Is it just pure multiple choice and select the right answer or does it have drag n drop and sim stuff?

Future00,

Since you'll be done with your MCDST exams today, you can probably answer the question about simulations.

AFAIK, the only exams with simulations to date are 70-290 and 70-291.

I passed both tests today.

70-271 I got a 816

70-272 I got a 945

I actually thought the 272 was going to be harder but it was actually the easiest of the 3 i have taken now.

271 had 61 Questions and had only 1 question where you had to drag items in order of how to complete the question. The rest were just multiple choice and select the best answer. Suprisingly there was a lot of SP2 questions on both 272 and 271.

I only used MS Press books for these tests and did some measureup practice tests since Tech-Ed had a free Code to get the full practice exams.

272 was only 50 questions and was strictly select the best answer. There was no choose 2 or 3 or put things in the right order. So I think that made it easier being just select the 1 best answer. I think i completed 272 in 25 minutes.

271 I think i spent about 1 hour 45 minuts on.

My next step is 290 and 291 to get my MCSA :)

nice one, well done!!!

Future00,

Way to go! That's another acronym on your resume, and a good review of the exams. I'm suprised as well that there are SP2 questions on the MCDST exams, but it's good to know.

Keep in mind that 70-290 and 70-291 are more difficult than 70-270 (and presumably 70-271 & 70-272), but you're well on your way!

Did you happen to get any good swag at TechEd?

Yea I got all kinds of misc stuff from all the vendors there. Every where you turned around there was someone in your face trying to talk you into something and giving out free stuff. MS themselves for just being there gave everyone some pretty nice laptop bags and they were full of software and brochures.

I got a pile of t-shirts and hats and so on... It was definitely cool. They had some fun stuff there too.

was one of the things we did. They also had a small rock wall that if you made it to the top you got a t-shirt. They had a fake indy car setup with a wheel and pedals with a big flat screen for a monitor mounted in front of it and you had to race for the best lap time to win stuff and so on... I'd go back again.

Last night MS rented Universal Studios and EVERYTHING was FREE. All you had to do was wear your badge to get in. Free beer, food rides all of it... There was I think they said 14,000 people there all from Tech-Ed between the staff and registerants. It was pretty cool.

It was funny the Universal staff people kept making techie jokes while waiting for rides and they said they can only get away with them with us type of people. :)

I do plan on studying for at least a full month now to get ready for the 290 and 291. I know they are going to be harder so i will take my time preparing for them. As soon as I get back home I am going to setup a full lab for testing.
