I'm working on my MCSA now. Should I take the Network + or Security + or both exams.

After the MCSA, I'm taking the CCNA..

Network+ or Security+ or both exams.

coach38,

If you want to use a CompTIA exam as your elective for MCSA/MCSE, then Security+ is the way to go.

You could use either Network+ or Server+ with A+ to satisfy the elective requirement, but Security+ is good enough by itself, and IMHO, not a difficult exam.

Also, A+/Network+ or A+/Server+ would count toward the elective requirement for MCSA only. MCSE requires either Security+ or another Microsoft exam for the elective.

A+, Network+, Security+, MCSA: Security 2003

go for both.

A+,N+,S+,L+,I+,HTI+,e-Biz+,Security+,CETma,CSS,CFOS/T,CCNT,CCTT,ACSP,ISA CCST3

I thought I only needed the Server+ to count as an elec for MCSA. Since, I have CheckPoint on my list I guess I'll go for the Security+. Thanks!

coach38,

Sorry, I do not know your background but in general you should have A+ and Network + or at least that level of experience before you move to any security course!

As the Cisco Security CCIEs told me at Networkers - "You have got to understand networking like the back of your hand before you can defend it!"

Just my thoughts!

I completely agree with you. A+ and Network+ satisfy the MCSA elective requirement in coach38's original question, and are important certifications to have.

I just wanted to provide the information that if he planned to persue MCSE later on, the Security+ would satisfy the elective requirement for both, but A+ and Network+ would not.

Thanks, for all you support...I've been working with computers for over 7yrs as a help desk/tech support, system admin, network admin, network eng, lead operations and senior unix operations in a Microsoft, Solaris(Unix) and Novell environments. I've never updated my current certs or took any new certs. I'm just starting to take new certs now. I just passed 70-290 exam. I'm working on my Security+ now. I'm going to take the Network+ but I'm not going to pass on taking the A+. Thanks again for your advice!
