Hi All,
I've passed my 290 exam ( 2nd attempt ) last Wednesday and picked up a good feel on what would be on the exam, based on postings from this site. So I wanted to make my own humble contribution for other people who may be preparing for the exam, here goes....
None of the questions on my re-take of the exam were the same as questions on my first exam. I remember most of the SIMS from both exams. I'm not a fan of braindumps, so I'm not going to go into specifics about the SIMS I saw on the exams, but here's a general listing of them....
SUS - configure a 2nd SUS server to receive updates from another SUS on your LAN. Then 1 or 2 other things needed to be configured. All specified in the exam question and very straightforward.
IIS - create a website, the file path to the content of your site is located in C:\folder\anotherfolder\file.xml
Backup - schedule a backup to run, your backup must include folder D:\folder and the registry ( <<< system state )
Shadow Copy - something about setting up a Volume Shadow Copy, fairly straightforward.
network - given a LAN diagram showing a few servers, one was DNS and there was a router. The task was add the computer to the domain, give the computer the name specified in the question, set the IP properties, default gateway etc.
As for the non-SIM questions, the trick there is to know the material 1st and get into the mindset of the silly way that the questions are worded 2nd. I don't know about the rest of you, but I think the wording on some of the questions is really unreasonable and often non-real world!
Let's put it this way, if I'm at work and say, I don't know, the proxy ( ISA ) server crashes and 300 people can't access the net, somehow I can't see my boss saying to me, "after you've had your lunch, and only if you have time, can you have a look at that little ISA problem, but don't stress yourself out, and don't worry about repairing the problem in a manner that makes the most sense, please do it with the least amount of administrative effort." Somehow I just can't see that ever happening.
I'm rambling now, but the point is, pay attantion to the wording. Sometimes you'll see 2 correct answers in a question, but you have to choose the answer that the wording in the question is looking for.
I found the Transcender exam useful for preparing me for the wording in the questions. I also studied with the MS Press book, it's very good and gets to the point without a lot of unneccesary filler.
Hope I've been of some help to anyone out there currently preparing for the exam. Good luck!
