Pass Connectstring to SQL server from VB to Crystal

I have several reports that were created in Crystal 8.5 using a DSN to access SQL server 7.0. The reports are called from a VB frontend which uses the same DSN to access the same server (Report names, paths etc are stored in a table).
New requirements call for a DSNless connection. I have a login screen in VB and create the connection string on the fly. I am not able to setup the Crystal reports correctly and pass the connection string from VB without having it hardcoded in Crystal...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
