I had a situation once where I replaced 3 phones thinking that the speakers were bad. The customer said that he couldn't here the messages at all. I figured out that he was trying to listen to his messages over his speaker without muting his speaker. That was all it was. If you have a Partner Mail VS R5.0, there is a problem with that software and they have a patch to fix it where the volume always goes up and down on its own. The patch actually removes there ability to manipulate the volume using DTMF. If you dial into the unit (on the handset) and have poor voice quality that is the end of your troubleshooting.
