I keep reading in advertizments, probably inappropriately posted, that Partner VS 4.1 has Cascading Outcalling. I cannot find out to set this on my VS 4.1. I am guessing that casading is only available in VS 5.0, Messaging 1, 6.0 and 7.0. Could someone confirm or deny this for me? Also, what are the differences between VS 4.0 and 4.1?

Hi DWLaurie,
I can confirm the R4.0 has but one number that it will call to per mailbox, the R5.0 up will call a series of five numbers per mailbox. The other thing I'll confirm is that the R4.0 and R4.1 are old. Why buy something that old? You can pick up an R5.0 cheaply and the features on the R1/R6/R7 blown the older ones away.

I already own the VS 4.1 and I work with a small non-profit ISP. The $200 for the VS 4.1 was a major stretch for their budget let alone double that for a VS 5 or triple that for a PM1! :)

Hi DWLaurie,
Okay, go into a personal mailbox and try to input outcalling numbers. If you can set up more than one, there is your answer for sure (no matter what the manual says). You have to enable outcalling permission from the admin level for the mailbox first.
Since you already own it, just keep an ear out for drive noise or garbled greetings. I just didn't want you to get stuck with a short lived unit.
The *.PDF's are a free download from Avaya. The site is Look under downloads and your release number (show all documents).

I've got all the PDF's I could possibly need although I cannot find a Rel 4.1 PDF, but I do have the Rel 4. So here's my dilema. I've read countless times that the 4.1 is capable of cascading outcalling. I cannot find how to enter more than one number on a single mailbox on my 4.1. I was trying to verify that my system is a 4.1 but other than the sticker on the outside, I cannot. When I call in to the Administrator it tells me "Partner Mail VS Release 4". I have not been able to pull codes for the RS-232. So I'm a little stumped. Luckily the HDD sounds nice and quiet, but it's the confirmation from the OS that I do or do not have a Rel 4.1 vs 4.0 that's eluding me.

OK, guess what, I got what I wanted, and I didn't! [mad]

Here's that I came up with:

using a 355A and a straight thru Cat5
set your terminal to VT100
9600, 8, N, 1, No Flow Control

Bounce the system and you will get something like this:

-- FACTORY DIAGNOSTICS TEST RESULTS --
Ram Test: PASSED
Disk Controller Test: PASSED
Dual-Port-RAM Test: PASSED
Dsp Touch Tone Test: FAILED

Channel 0 Touch Tone test failure
Channel 1 Touch Tone test failure
Channel 2 Touch Tone test failure
Channel 3 Touch Tone test failure
Pcmcia Test: PASSED

So, I got what the module had to tell me but it wasn't what I wanted to know and I DEFINITELY didn't want to see failures P-)

Well, the module works perfectly well as far as I know AND you guys now know how to pull test results on such a module!

Hi DWLaurie,
If you can only enter one number, then that's all it does. No cascading outcalling.

You know, I feel better now. I had never heard of Partner Mail VS4.1.
