I have a business that bought their own phones off ebay. They tell me they do not work. They have an older partner system and now use 18D sets, is there a software update on some of the newer phones that may not work? Also do I need to tell it there is a 34D instead of a 18D phone and if so what program is it. I thought it would automatically work just the rest of the buttons would be inoperable.

How old is their Partner system? Partner, Partner Plus, Partner II, Partner ACS?

Do the beep test - go off hook on a line (or call them and listen from your end), and press Feature #1. Listen to the pattern of the beeps which will tell us what model and release it is.

The top 4 buttons (without the lights) are not recognized by the older processors.

Unlike the digital system telephones unused with the Avaya Merlin Legend and Magix (MLX and 4400 Series) that identify themselves to the processor, Partner system telephones (aka "ETR" sets) do not. The Legend and Magix systems do have an inventory feature for telephones and modules. No such thing with the Partner system.

Station ports on Partner systems...such as the ACS...need to be able to support different system telephones that contain different numbers of programmable buttons. The most number of programmable buttons a system phone can have is 34. So each Partner port needs to be able to support a phone that contains up to 34 buttons. To the processor...6, 18 and 34 button sets look pretty much the same. The difference is the number of buttons available to signal the processor via the orange/white or green/white pairs.
