Partner PC Messaging R1?

I have a PC Messaging card. R1 I think! It is dated 1997. Works fine, but must wait until a message is done before it will detect DTMF tone for function such as delete or password or selecting mailbox number. Is this normal for the older cards, or is it corrupt? Can it be defaulted somehow to clear this?
