Does this system allow us to use 3 digit extension number. Example: For Betty Smith press 103, For John Smith Press 104 etc....

or are we stuck with the 2 digit extension?

Also:
Is the Partner Messaging R1 designed for software upgrades? If so has avaya release any?

Thanks
John

While the R1 will recognize boxes built as 3 digits, they are restricted to transfers subject to the hard coded 2 digit extension dialing plan that the Partner uses.

So, if you set selector code 1 as "Direct Extension Dialing" and you built box 105, the R1 would hear 10, disregard the 5 and transfer the call to 10.

The 3 digit capability was a leftover from the Merlin Mail days, and its current intention is to allow the system to accept up to 200 mailboxes: impossible with a 2 digit plan. Maybe someday flexible dial plans will happen on Partner, but no time soon, methinks.

The R1 has the ability to be flashed to higher firmware for bug fixes within R1, but it was not designed to upgrade from an R1 to R6. That would take a hard drive reload.

Hey, I just did an R6, and made 100 guest mailboxes for a real estate agency. The guest mailboxes are for property information. We told the Partner Messaging that it had 3 digits maximum, and made all of the guest mailboxes in the 600 range. If a user dials a 2-digit extension number for one of the physical phones, it takes a couple of seconds to time out before it realizes that no more digits are coming and then does the transfer. If you dial # at the end of the extension number (like 10#) the transfer happens right away. For the guest mailboxes, just set selector code 6 to Direct Extension Transfer. Then we set each of the mailboxes to Answer Only, and made its Personal Operator one more guest mailbox with normal answer and record capability.
