We just purchased a used 4-port Partner Mail with 012/ringer card. Unit is plugged into 012 card and we confirmed 012 card is working properly. When powered ON, the power indicator light is lit but the port lights are not on. After waiting for 10 minutes, there is a constant beeping sound.

We will attempt to reset via null modem using steps provided by vendor exsmogger in previous post.

My question is before we do this...the constant beeping sound and dead port lights, does this indicate it is a bad unit?

Also, if any of you have manuals, much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Is this a partner or a Legend? 012t/r is a legend product.

The voicemail is a 4-port partner mail and yes, it is an 012 single line card with ring generator that's in our Merlin II.

Let's see:

A Partner Mail works with a Partner system, the mode codes are different from a Merlin (Legend) system.

An 012 with Ring Generator was introduced for Merlin Legend R2.1, and won't work in a Merlin II.

Constant beeping sound? Sounds like a failed hard drive.

So who is advising you on what you need to expand your phone system?

Hi Tommy. First off, the 012 card does work in our Merlin II. I installed yesterday and working great on analog single line phones.

Regarding Partner mail, rather not say vendor at this time until I find out if we've been misled but the vendor stated Partner Mail is the same as Merlin Mail. I sent this vendor clear photo images of our Merlin II.

I would agree with your assessment regarding possible failed hard drive and not to question your expertise but am I missing something with your statement regarding the 012 only working on a Merlin Legend R2.1? Again, we have a Merlin II R3 and the card is working 100%.

OK, you've driven me back to Avaya's support page for Merlin II products
The 012 with Ring Generator was introduced in April '99, for the Merlin Legend, can't confirm that it is backwards compatible with the Merlin II
— A new 012 (tip/ring) module [apparatus code 517G13 (28) or
higher letter] contains a built-in ring generator. The maximum
ring equivalency number (REN) supported is 2.2, and the
module will ring four ports at one time. Bridging of single-line
telephones is not supported because of poor transmission
quality

The mode codes on a Partner and Merlin are different, so although the Partner Mail would answer calls directed to it, it would not be able to decipher what to do with it.

If you hook to the serial port on the Partner Mail, with a null-modem cable, 1200-N-8-1, and Hyperterminal, you can watch the boot up process and see exactly where it is failing.

I will bring this up with the vendor. Upsetting to us a vendor would make such a false statement, indicating Partner mail and Merlin mail are one and the same.

I appreciate your info and feedback. I will let you know what resolution is. Thanks again.

In regards to documentation and manuals, they are free for the download: support.avaya.com or wedophones.com as a second source.

....JIM....

Any reputable vendor would know a Partner Mail can't work on a Merlin system. They do program similar, but as TTT stated the mode codes are different and won't work.

My thanks to TTT and telecomboy for your feedback. Giving some credit to the vendor, they will be crediting us for the unit.

After TTT's input (and telecomboy's confirmation), I was able to contact a vendor that actually sounds like they know what they're doing. Wish me luck! Thanks again.
