I have a Partner ACS with the Partner Mail VS R4.0 and a 4x20 upgrade card. The unit was in storage for about 4 months. When I reinstalled it, the voicemail started to make "tones" and would not answer calls.

The tones are a series of beeps which increase in frequency each time. It repeats the sequence at intervals of about five seconds. The sequence is "beep -- beep beep -- beep beep beep". The second beep is higher frequency than the first and the third is higher than the second.

I haven't heard this before, so, any input will be helpful.

Thanks

Sounds like the hard drive has crashed, and is having trouble restarting.

Do NOT try this, although it worked for me on a couple of units :)

Power up the switch while GENTLY rapping on the lower center right hand side of the VS mail. Sometimes this will free up a stuck hard drive head.

Thanks for the info. It is very likely that the drive is stuck, since it was in storage. I have done the tap routine on a couple of PCs that I knew were going to be scrapped and it works. I just never thought about the voicemail having the same problem.

Is there any documentation available that talks about these tones? It might be useful to know what else is lurking in these things.

Thanks again for the help.

I had one do the same thing on a remote site. I sent the contracted tech a new VS R5 and had him ship the old back to me. It worked fine on the bench: the shipping freed the drive and worked like a charm. Hard to explain to a customer that it was broken. Really, it's broken. No, really. Well, no, I can't prove it, but trust me, it's broke! Really! They paid for the new one, took the old with them and installed it in a local switch. It's still working fine 6 months later.

How about taking it out and shipping it to yourself? heheh

I think having it bounce around in the back of my van for two weeks would qualify as "shipping". Plus, I don't have to pay for it!
