I have a Release 2 ACS system with 5-slot backplane.
Processor is in slot P
308EC in slot 1
Parnet Mail VS release 4.1 in slot 2

According to the manual, the port numbers for voice mail (to assign to hunt group 7) are 28 and 29. But this didn't work. Calling 28 or 29 results in no answer.

After a lot of calling, I found that ports 30, 31 answer with the voice mail system, so I have assigned them to hunt group 7. I guess I should be happy that I got it working, but does anyone know why these ports?

The manual you're looking at must have been produced before ACS R3, when the 308 modules became available. Previous to that, only 206 modules could be used.

The Partner Mail VS is seen by the system as a 006 module, using the last 2 or 4 ports, depending on if you have a 2 or 4 port card.

Counting extension numbers on the ACS itself, you have 10-17, on the 308 in slot 1 you have 18-25, and the VS mail in slot 2 would be 26-31 (6 stations). So if it is a 2 port unit, that brings you to the 30 and 31 that you discovered.
