I'm trying to keep an old system alive and dealing with intermittent static on some ports. I've got a lot of spare hardware but I've run out of pieces that match exactly. Is it ok to mix 206E and 206EC modules? What about different versions? I have some that are 3.0, 3.1 and 4.1.

The static, by the way, seems to occur in the same slot. Reading other comments, static seems to be caused by bad capacitors, but there aren't any in the chassis, are there?

From the perspective of expansion, the difference between the E and EC is that any POTs lines connected to the "C" module will support caller ID.

I don't think that there are any capacitors on the backplane. Static is common with old Partner hardware and 206 modules are old.

My suggestion would be to strongly consider upgrading to the latest revision hardware (R8 processor and 308EC expansion modules).

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

Can I replace a 206E with a 206EC? Can I replace a 3.1 with a 4.1? The processor module is a 4.1.

Kerflumper,
You need to determine if you have a bad slot in the carrier or a bad module.

To do this: put a good (no static) module into the slot.
1. If the static is still there, you have a bad slot.
Your options are:
- Replace the 5-slot carrier("the chassis") OR
- Put a module into that slot but don't use it. Plug the wires into one of the other modules. (This is assuming that the other modules are static-free and you have open ports available. If you choose this option, any extensions and lines that were moved will be renumbered by the system. You will need to reprogram to accommodate these changes.)

2. If the static is gone, the module was bad. Replace the module with a good one.
