Hi gurus.

I need your help, I have a problem with my laptop Thinkpad IBM, it does not want to reboot on safe mode, nomatter what it just wont reboot, I would like to get to the boot.ini file to force the safe mode but the problem is, is not on my root c:\boot.ini, is not there. how is my computer booting up if there is no boot.ini, I have no multi partitions or at least I cant see it, I always thought I had one, how can I force the computer to show me all partitions so I can find my boot.ini

Thanks a bunch gurus

its a hidden file, in windows explorer go to extras-folderoptions-view and mark show hidden files/folders

Easier to just right click on My Computer-> Properties-> Advanced->Startup and recovery "Settings" button.

Then just click on the Edit button there to bring up the boot.ini file.

Or pressing F8 when the machine starts up, just after the IBM splash screen to bring up the Windows boot menu.

Now what does this have to do with Partitions?

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Of course, you can always just go to Start Run and type

c:\boot.ini

It will open even if hidden. It shouldn't be read only.

True, but who's to say its in C:, mines on D: for instance.

The MsConfig tool will allow you to edit the boot.ini so that it will try and start in Safe Mode, you can do it via the Boot tab.

HOW TO: Edit the Boot.ini File in Windows XP (Q289022)

We're all assuming here that you can boot successfully into Normal mode. In the run box type diskmgmt.msc and that will show you partition(s) on the hard drive.

I found that early versions of XP did appear by default to put the system file and read only attributes on boot.ini for some reason. Guess it was to stop the casual user mucking about with it...

I have tried that an no boot.ini shows anywhere

Vacunita
I can get to the file like that thanks but it does not tell me where it is phisically, the reason why I am asking for particion , is that my computer boots up no problem and it only shows me one partition, so where is the boot file?

goomba

I tried that and nothing was found, is like is not on C

Vacunita

My cuold be too on D: but how do I get there if there is no D drive to see, this boot file has to be somewhere

Thanks a bunch to all of you gurus
Thanks

Can you follow Vancunita's method and when edit brings up the Boot.ini in notepad perform a "Save As" and then look at the path from the "Save As" dialog?

If you choose to battle wits with the witless be prepared to lose.

I did try that, but the path given was the c: drive, I have allowed everything and anything and I still cant see the boot.ini file on c:\root.

Thanks a bunch for battling with this mistery

Have you tried... "In the run box type diskmgmt.msc and that will show you partition(s) on the hard drive." ??

If you have only the one partition you should be able to use Windows Explorer to search for that file. However, I still use the old Windows File Manager which neatly finds files on the hard drive. The file is usually located alongside NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and PAGEFILE.SYS. Can you see those files?

If only one partition exists then boot.ini should reside in that partition.

Following on Lemon's advice, you should also Uncheck the" Hide Protected Operating System Files" Checkbox there.

Maybe time to use a bootable CD to browse the hard drive OUTSIDE of the windows operating system. You could also edit the file as you please then without windows hiding the file or preventing the editing.

You don't have GoBack or anything like that do you?

D... Gurus

As I said, I have tried everything and anything but lemo's advice, once I did that unchecked "Hide OS protected file" the sucker was there, Goaoz you were right on track, once I so those files I knew I missed Lemo's advice, thanks all of you ALL of you for your help.

Thanks a bunch gurus
