Hi, I just purchased a laptop and my friend said that it's a good idea to purchase an external hard drive because laptop hard drives fail a lot. So, to save some money, I'm purchasing an IDE enclosure case, and a WD1000BB internal hard drive. The hard drive is used and from ebay. So, I'd like to clean the slate and create a new partition using Partition Magic. So, I'm just curious, since its connected to my system via USB, will it change anything? Or will Partition Magic notice the drive with no problem and I'll be able to change it like any other hard drive?

Note: I am using Windows XP Pro & Thanks for the help in advance.

You shouldnt have any problem with it. You may not even have to use partition magic as win xp pro can format it for you.
If you are not able to format it then take the hard drive out of the usb box and slave it to an ide cable and format it from there and then put it back in the usb box.

I forgot to mention that the place to do this from is computer management\ disk management. You get there by right clicking on my computer and click on manage.

I could do that, but I don't have a Desktop System anymore. Well, I have this one, but it's just so slow, I dread using it. But I guess if worst comes to worst I could do that. Thanks for the advice.

O I forgot about computer management! Thanks again

You're welcome. But you can do it with your laptop via computer management.
