I have a 40 GB hard disk, with windows 2000 and XP installed (dual boot). I had started partition magic with the intent partitioning my hard drive into 2 partitions. I had started the process and left it running. However, some time after the power went, and the computer went off before the process was completed. As I was not watching the process I dont know how far the process had gone before the power went. Now when I turn on the PC, it only goes as far as to say "Boot Record Found....OK". It stops there. I had another hard disk (1.2 GB), so what I did was to install win 2000 and partition magic 8, and used the 40 GB as a slave. When I booted the first time, windows disk check started and detected errors on the 40 GB. It gave messages like "unrecognized format detected" and attempted to fix the problem by converting the folders to files. Windows was still able to recognize the name of the folders. However after Windows finished booting it did not detect the 40 GB. When I started Partition Magic it detected the 40 GB, reading the file system as "PqRP", and there is no empty space on the disk ( even though before I started the partition only 13 GB of space was being used). Can I get back my data?

You may be able to with data recovery app - free one here (better chance wioth that if filestore was fat32). Or try a Google search to find some commercial ones (some also recommended on this site by other sucessful retrievers).

PS. Were 2k & XP on the same or separate partitions? (separate operating system should always be on separate partitions).

2000 and XP was on the same partition. The file system was FAT32

Try that app then - a number of posters here have had moderate to complete success retrieving data using it.

PS. Stable door after nag gone - but backing up (at least important data) is always a good idea before restructuring partitions (and in fact at any time, on an ongoing basis of course)
