Hi
When there is an power outage and my unix boxes (1,2,3) reboot all of them. After that I just remount to connect the box 2 and 3 with 1. However, this time I can not mount because one of partition of box 1 has error and the system asks me to run fsck.

After I run fsck, here is the error:
"... Can't open the device /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s7".

I would like to know what is that mean? Does it mean this partition is damaged and I lost all data? Is there anyway to fix or recover it?

Thanks

Make sure the filesystem is unmounted. Try fsck -y -o b=32. This will attempt to use an alternate superblock to check against. I think I ran into an issue where I had to run fsck /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s7 instead of fsck /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s7. Just a thought. There is always a restore from a backup.

Hi Sys Adm

Could you tell me more, specific with the sentence "I think I ran into an issue where I had to run fsck /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s7 instead of fsck /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s7". What are the different between "dsk" and "rdsk" and what and where is my backup stored?

Thanks

On c0t1d0 do you only have slice s7? If you have other slices on that drive can you fsck those?
Does format show drive c0t0d0?
If you only have slice 7 then it looks like the drive went south during the power cycle.

Hi tuka

I did fsck, and it is automatically check other slices for me, I even rem out the bad slice c0t1d0s7 in vfstab and let the system check other slices.

- First I can not run format when I did not rem this out
- As the result, I have to rem it out and fsck then I can run format to see other slices, but I forget whether I see the slice c0t0d0 or not !! Will double check again (the box located at another location and there is not remote access to this box.)

- By the way, if the slice c0t1d0s7 is really died, it means I don't have any way to retrieve data back on it, right? !!!!

If you only have slice 7 on this disk then it is possible
that the disk had a spin up problem on the power cycle.
This problem could be the power for this drive isn't there
or stiction. For stiction you can remove the drive and do a couple of quick twists and hurriedly re-installed the drive.

Your /etc/vfstab should show what is being mounted.

Wow, what's a way. I shall try.
Thanks.
