Can you install a PRI service on the Legend and only use part of the trunks. I am doing an install where the customer wants a PRI but only wants to use the first 9 channels. I have never done this before and was wondering if there were any issues.

Yes, It is done all the time.

The vendor must (and usually knows this) supply the 24th chanell as the D.

yep. I worked just fine. We used the first 9 channels and the D channel and off we went. I had never come across this scenario before, so I did not want any suprises.

Just out of curiosity, since you're paying for all 24 channels with a PRI, why not use them?

Correct me if I am wrong, but usually, in a case like this, the vendor is only providing x number of channels, not 24.

What they (the VENDOR) usually does is use the rest of the pipe for DATA.

But it changes from vendor to vendor.

Certainly technology is always changing and maybe it has for PRI's. My understanding is you cannot fractionalize (not to be confused with 'Drop and Insert') a PRI. Since you own the signaling (D) channel for the pipe another customer would have no way of controlling any channels left over. I can see this in a fractional T1 with robbed bit, where you take 9 channels and another customer takes 6 channels and so on, but not with a PRI.

I am setting one up for a cut on Monday with 15 "B" channels.

I did one a few weeks ago with only 9 "B" channels.

I do not understand the post about "another customer".

When these T1's are installed, they go straight to ONE Customer.

The "rest of the pipe" usually provides "DATA", like to their router.

Perhaps I misunderstood the original and subsequent posts in that there was no mention of implementing data on the remaining channels :)

It has been my experience that the Vendor does the DATA thing seperately.

It's like he hands me some T1 to plug into my DS1 Card, and has some more T1 he gives to the DATA guy.

In this case, they went with a vendor who provided an intergrated voice and data package over IP. They only purchased the rights to 9 voice lines plus the D channel. The rest of the bandwidth is being used for data. It is a dynamic allocation, so if no voice channels are being used, then they get the full t-1, minus the d channel, for data.

Who is their vendor and how is the product working - i have a customer who is considering a similar product right now.

the vendor is Cbeyond Communications. They are using a Cisco IAD 2400 to provide voice and data

Cbeyond is the one that provided the 15 Channel PRI I cut on Monday.

We had a problem, and their Tech Support guy went to all the trouble to come out (ON THE ICY ROADS HERE IN DENVER AFTER A Mini-Blizzard) and use his T-Berd to help us understand that we had a bad DS1 card. (I had never seen one fail like this one did. It would route calls, but it WOULD NOT TALK!)

As far as I am concerned, Cbeyond is one of the best providers out here. (Don't get me wrong, I have no vested interest in helping them sell, I am just a programmer/provisioner)

I could tell you bad things about others, but Cbeyond is always patient and willing to help.

Hey Merlinman, I am in denver too. Maybe we have worked together, if not, maybe we can. email me at ghostin at myway . com. and we can chat.
