In a previous thread I learned security can prevent text copying from PDF files:

Q: Is there a way to copy the text by some work aroung or utility? I could OCR the printout, so security can be defeated. Any ideas?

Thank you. Dave

Are you working with PC or Mac?

If PC, check this link:

This will create a pdf with no security so you can do as you wish with it including copying text to the clipboard.

I feel it's important to mention, however, that there may be some legal issues with using password recovery programs so you might want to read their terms of use and legal section before using the software. If you have doubts about whether your purposes are strictly legal, I wouldn't use it.

who235 - Not Mac. XP Pro. I have documents from Sony, etc that I want a Text to Speech Reader Software to read the text that I copy from a PDF document.

I don't have any problems making documents that I can copy from. Why are there documents that are locked?

I am not trying to rip off Sony, just want learn while I am in a car - avoiding talk radio drivel, etc. where the PC reads text to me. I do it with web pages, Word doc's, etc. why not all PDF's? I learned a lot of Cisco material that way.

Thanks, Dave

I think that would probably constitute fair use, but I'm certainly not an intellectual property lawyer.

I just remind people of the legalities so nobody calls me from prison to say I never told them. :)

I also don't want my posts red flagged.

I deal with a ton of architects that send me PDF's to print where the security settings don't allow printing - go figure that one out. . .

I think people are just paranoid in this day and age about their content.

Anyway, good luck.

Martin

wo235, Martin - thank you. Nope - don't want legal problems.

I will run this by Leo Laporte a California tech radio show host. See leoville.com & leoville.tv/radio/pmwiki.php/Main/AudioArchives. Very interesting show on KFI:

Leo Laporte: The Tech Guy on KFI - Main.HomePage
Leo Laporte: The Tech Guy on KFI ... Tune in Saturday and Sunday, 11a-2p Pacific
on KFI 640 AM via broadcast and Internet from Los Angeles. ...
