I am about to start a part of a project that requires parsing an excel file (120 rows x 12 columns) and inserting that data into mySql.

I searched here and found lots of people wanting to go the other way (sql -> excel) but cant seem to find anyone that wants to read an excel file. I suppose that might mean that I am missing something completly obvious.

Windows has an ODBC driver that will read .xls files. Each sheet is a table and you have rows and cols from there. It's really straightforward. If you need some help reply here.

I will be processing the excel file as a csv as kenrbnsn suggested.

Use Excel XML format. I force my users to use OpenOffice or MS OFFICE 2003. They save their document as Office XML file. Quite easy to parse.
