pardox Access linking

When trying to link to paradox 5.0 tables from access using the paradox driver getting an error
"External table not the Expected format"
if we try to use an odbc get the error
"you cannot use odbc to link an external microsoft jet or isam database table to your table."
Can anyone shed some light on this error.
Tried in access 97, 2000
