Just a general note of frustration:

Over the holidays I had to clean my sister's PC. She was running XP without any firewall (hardware or software), and her machine had been "0wn3d" a long time -- sometime in August it started getting slower and slower....

It was so bad I couldn't even download Hijack this to clean it, nor could I download Winzip to save some of her files. I couldn't even bring up the Windows task manager! I turned off the broadband router and copied what I could onto floppies. I then used the ultimate cleaner: FDisk.

After installing a NAT box, installing Norton, turning on the XP firewall, and lecturing her on browsing habits, she's back up and running. What a holiday!

chiph,

Frustration understood...I've been down that road on a number of of my family's machines. One other measure you might find will reduce your future workload is to put SpyBot on the machine with its IMMUNIZE function activated. Keeps the malware/spyware to a minimum. Not foolproof, but a big help, I find.

I have the same problem with my family.

"You're machine is bloated again, I told you not to install Kazaa"

Sure enough 3 months later Kazaa and every 3rd party IE bar under the sun is installed again.

God Bless Ghost.
