One of the principles for protecting our computers is to only run software from reputable sources. Free shareware type stuff is normally considered dangerous.
Why doesn't this logic apply to the good-guy software: cwshredder, hijackthis, adaware, spybot S&D etc. An author can provide a useful tool and keep it benign until it gains wide acceptance, then introduce whatever he wants during a revision. Firewalls are bypassed... the user launches the executable themself.
