I've just spoken to a tech onsite during a support call and was told by him that the major manufacturers of boards fro printers are phasing out parallel and serial interfaces for their devices by May of next year. We support some legacy apps which have to use a parallel printer.
Has any one else heard of this? I googled but couldn't find anything.

I have hit this issue already. Just try getting a dot matrix printer today!

The actual issue I solved was a replacement half height cased new PC from Dell with no parallel port. It had to be connected to a parallel port printer! I could not find a half height PCI bus parallel port card available quickly either.

The solution was a USB - Parallel port cable, Then network share the printer in order to associate LPT1 with the printer. Nightmare!

It sure is but it can be made to work, even in unlikely configurations.
