Come to find out, if you have a customer who replaces his/hers vmpro server, and if they had a license dongle that was Parallel, and if the new server for vmpro does not come equiped with a Parallel port and the cust goes out and buys one. The license dongle will not work on the newly installed Parallel port. Speaking with the hardware guys you will need a pciX extender to give the Parallel card full functionality of the Parallel port. So don't sell the Parallel dongle.

we only sell USB dongle for the 406 and with the IP 500 it is embedded into the processor anyways, but good to know, Thanks

I would not even considering a usb or parallel dongle
I would always use the serial dongle on a SOE,406 or 412 !!!
No trouble with a license server

TLPETER: That is correct we have 3 serial dongles out there, but sometimes it is hard to get a different part number into the sales departments ritual, they have a list (mostly self made)and they follow that until the parts come back as invalid or it doesn't work with that part and they HAVE to change it.
I only had problems twice with the USB dongle and that was due to an upgrade when the tech onsite didn't upgrade properly and took it out before the upgrade.

Make the sales department clear that they need to sell the serial one

I even had one usb dongle stolen because somebody thought it was a memory stick :)

I agree serial is the way to go. USB is still better than parallel for future-proofing.

@alfalfa, you could alway contact your distributor and do a license swap to a new serial dongle.. that way you never have to worry about it again.

Hit the sales guys with the cost of the new serial dongle and priority overnight shipping of the old back to Avaya enough and they will get the message.

If you have parts lists for salesguys the easiest way to get them to stop ordering the other dongles is to get your service, sales, or operations departments to alocate, or charge an additional $500 technical services to all systems that have a USB, or Parrallel dongle in the pricing structure. Another option is to put a $500 mark up minimum on the USB/parr dongles in your pricing structure.

Done deal, after all these are sales guys, they are all about money, not about what is best for the customer, performance, security, or the tech. If it costs more against their NET profit on the project they will get less commission, and you never have to tell them twice.

I wish I had the powers to do any of that, but I am just the guy to fix it or make it work, I would love to do any of these suggestion believe me.
But I guess with the new IP500 the problem has vanished all by itself and I only have to make sure that the almost 200 USB and parallel dingles out there work.

I see your point, but if the decision makers can be convinced the cost to implement/service is higher, which it is, they can alocate higher costs to it. This approach will work for changing behaviour in an org.

worth a shot, but the "decision makers" don't like to make decisions it seems in our company that require following up on people to actually do as they are told. I will however try my luck again with them and point out the info from here and maybe I get lucky this time.
